I have been working at Mecklenburg EMS Agency - Medic full-time (More than a year)

Pros

- Busy system, plenty of opportunity to gain experience in all types and priorities of calls
- Broad patient demographic gives you many different experiences and types of interaction
- Top notch equipment and very professional logistics and maintenance crews
- Plenty of opportunity for overtime
- New Medical Director is progressive and open-minded, he is systematically changing and
     broadening protocols to give medics more freedom and responsibility
- Internal research of evidence based medicine drives protocols and is used by systems nationally
     as a resource/model
- Opportunity to work either 911 or non-emergency transport and on a medic-medic, medic-basic,
     or basic-basic truck.
- Hiring and relocation bonuses for paramedics that are not seen in many EMS systems.
- Multiple specialized teams that employees can get involved with for further serving and
     advancement opportunities and skill specialization.

Cons

- Large number of employees with many overlapping shifts makes it difficult to cultivate
     relationships with coworkers or have any sense of teamwork
- Though taking performance and study results seriously is good, the constant push to continually
     improve, even when out-performing most of the country, adds stress without any real recognition
     of current successes
- All evaluation is based on statistics and numbers (i.e. patient satisfaction, cardiac arrest data,
    performance times, test scores). The people involved tend to get lost in the numbers, making
    employees feel unvalued.
- A great deal of emphasis on the corporate business model, utilizing linear qualifiers, such as
    performance statistics and test scores, to rank and marginalize employees. There is a constant
    pressure to perform at the risk of maintaining your position. Expendability is not at all masked.
- The company does not truly stand behind it's employees or care for their well-being. Their
    worker's compensation program is highly questionable, works against the employee and their
    health, and does
    not protect the employee or their position. Once again, you are very expendable.
- Most (not all, there are a few very notable exceptions) of the operations management team is out
     of touch and on a power trip. Experiences with supervisors on scene have shown that being a
    "company man" holds more water than being among the best and brightest of providers. Most
    are older-middle-aged, live for vacation and/or retirement, and are not overly interested in their
    small team of employees. As a group, there are not nearly enough "lead-by-example" types.
- Specialty teams are limited to employees who have served at least 2 years as Crew Chief
    (average of 3.5 yrs employment at paramedic level), regardless of prior experience. This severely
    short-changes the organization in taking full advantage of new employees with broad
    backgrounds (years in EMS, military, fire/rescue etc). It also limits veteran providers, who just
    happen to be new to the agency, from fully using their skills and experience.

    Pros

    Excellent opportunity for career growth within the Agency
    New ambulances designed by the field employees to allow for comfortable ride for the patient while allowing us as care providers the proper space we need to work
    Administration values the input of the employees, as seen above, hte provide that positive work enviroment and relationship
    Pay is excellent and well above average across the state/region
    Paramedics get 15% pay increase to become a Crew Chief
    Annual raises worth up to 4%
    Paramedics can earn up to 19% pay increase within the first year
    Agency performance bonuses worth a potential total of $3,000 per year
    Outstanding benefits package including medical, dental and vision
    11 paid holidays whether you are working or not
    State retirement and you can be vested at 5 years
    New Stryker gurneys
    Philips MRx monitors
    Large variety of shifts and hours and even work as a dual Paramedic truck on many shifts
    We have a Medical Director who is involved heavily with protocols and employees
    Paid monthly training to maintain your certs for State and NR (if you have it)
    All post are either MEDIC stations of CFD/County stations, no street corner posting

    BOTTOMLINE: When it comes to EMS this is a place where you can have a career and not a job. You will feel valued as an employee and grow professionally as a clinician

    Cons

    Like anywhere else, depending on your shift, working the occasional Holiday or weekend.

    Advice to Management

    Keep the positive relationship you have worked on building with us as employees and valuing our input on projects and agency improvements.
