Pros

Flexibility to work from home and brand recognition in the industry

Salary and benefits can be below median and not competitive in the industry.

Advice to Management

Make pay for junior employees more competitive. Bonus for junior employees is quite horrible.

    Pros

Promotions are fair and based on merit.

    Cons

Horrible work-life balance. High stress environment.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on stock price and start focusing on serving our clients. Staffing is horrible, with lots of junior people, lots of Principals, and hardly anyone in between where all the project management and day to day consulting occurs. This will eventually lead to either clients becoming dissatisfied with lack of attention paid to them or with consultants leaving Mercer for other employers.

    Pros

Working at Mercer provides the opportunity for exposure to a broad range of consulting services. There are many paths you can take to having a successful career at Mercer, especially if you specialize in something and build a niche for yourself. There really is a culture of fun where we can laugh and enjoy time working together in spite of tough clients and projects.

Overall, upper level consultants are understanding of workloads and fair in their expectations. The PFS process allows you to propose new direction that you might want to take and encourages open communication about likes and dislikes about your position.

    Cons

It can be difficult to know where you stand career wise and when to expect to move up. I think there's a tendency toward rewarding higher level employees more readily than lower level employees even if the contribution relative to the position is similar.

Training for new employees is very limited - I think there's a tendency to hire people who are ready to start day 1, rather than investing in people who could be trained to be great. I've seen lots of people hired because they have the name of one of our competitors on their resume and not much else.

There is some erosion of niceties that we used to have - breakfast once a week, etc.

    Advice to Management

To recognize talent at lower levels of the organization more effectively and reward them.
