I have been working at Mercer full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Good place to work, majority of people are very motivated and professional. Senior management has been upgraded and is trying to change the culture in terms of rewarding performance. Lots of different opportunities but you need to look for them.

Cons

Identification and nuturing of potential in newer staff isn't really built in to the company's DNA. HR is pretty weak due to lack of mgt focus on it and drastically reduced staff in this area.

A lot of your career potential can depend on who you work for and not necessarily on what you do.

Advice to Management

Listen more to your own consulting advice, improve the HR function and properly staff it

    Pros

    Entrepreneurial spirit encouraged
    Flexibility and virtual work environment
Bonus plan, when fully funded, is generous

    Cons

Questionable decision making at senior management level
Flat organizational structure makes advancement difficult
    Need better sales people

    Advice to Management

Stop worrying about revenue and implementing tiny clients on which the margins will never yield any profit. Also need to figure out a way to better leverage consulting business to help outsourcing thrive.

I worked at Mercer full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, ability to take control of projects, great atmosphere, and great people. Managers and Team Leads will often let you take charge of a project. The company is very group-oriented, so you have the support of others around you.

    Cons

The company does not care enough about keeping its good, strong employees. Depending on the client, you can get stuck in a role indefinitely. They do not do enough cross-training on the clients to allow people to move around and do different things.

    Advice to Management

Live up to promises and place people where they desire to be. Hire effective supervisors who are good with people management and care about the needs of their subordinates.
