Pros

The ability to have a better understanding of the law and how it affects the general public. Since the laws of insurance is constantly changing, you are recommended to be fluid in this industry.

Cons

There are no many positions that are available. It is also difficult to switch from one field of expertise to another field even if we are dealing in the same industry (ie. move from claims adjuster to an underwriter is difficult at best).

Advice to Management

Management styles could use new techniques and modernization.

I worked at Mercury General full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This is a good company to get your training and then move on. They train staff in most positions, offer good benefit packages, pay yearly bonuses and most years you get a profit sharing bonus.

    Cons

The pay is on the lower end of the scale. They overwork their employees and do not value their hardest workers. There is a lot of favoritism going on within management, most promotions are not based on merit, but rather, who the manager/director becomes friends with.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees, stop thinking of them as machines or just a number and be fair - pay attention to the ones who actually DO the job correctly with little or no help. The best employees are not simply the ones who never take days off and just show up to work on time. This is a job that requires analytical thinking - not just seat fillers. Value those employees that actually know and understand the job and work with the company's interest in mind, trying to save money, etc - not just the ones who are willing to cut whatever corner they can just to get their files closed as quickly as possible.
