I worked at Mercy College as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

New college president seems to be committed to the college's original vision in providing a good college education to those who cannot afford most private colleges.

Despite less-than-desirable working conditions, the unflagging commitment of some of the college faculty and staff to the highest standards of teaching, learning, and service was astounding.

    Cons

The once-highly popular and esteemed graduate program that I taught in for many years has been so changed as to be unrecognizable. The department head who took over is sharply misaligned with the college's vision and promise. Many of the best faculty left.

The morale among faculty and staff plunged under the former college president. As a result, the college-wide dysfunction (especially in communication with adjuncts and students) was rampant.
The huge turnover of those hired as "one-stop" staff to assist students created confusion and discouragement.

    Advice to Management

Follow your new college president's leadership. Align yourself as one, committed body instead of separate silos. Forget "power" acquisition and elite title. Forget seeing higher education as a "business." Servant leadership should be the reigning model.
