I have been working at Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

The nurses are doctors along with patients are much nicer than you would expect to meet in a similiar situation

Cons

The nurses, receptionists and housekeeping are very underpaid since mercy along with Iowa health has a monopoly on health care jobs. Since there are only two large employers they work together to artificially suppress wages for anyone less than a doctor or mngmt.

Advice to Management

Consider showing your employees respect in the form of wage compensation not just hollow words.

    Pros

Great co-workers and direct management team. The ER team really works well together and creates a fun environment even with the stressful work that we do.

    Cons

Departments don't work well together. Lack of communication between departments creates un-needed friction. The floors are not appropriately staffed which creates an unsafe environment in the ER with holding 20+ patients a night.

    Advice to Management

When making changes that span several departments, such as the way report is given from ED staff to the floor RN, have every nurse sign off on the change so that they can't say they knew nothing of the change.
