I worked at Merrill Lynch full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Lots of resources at Merrill Lynch. Constant attention and free food from Mutual Fund Wholesalers. Top branch advisors had very little time, but were sometimes good sources of advice. Brand lent credibility to my work.

Cons

Utility of the resources is questionable, each offered a different way to make or preserve money, but many were redundant to each other. District Manager had no time for the new advisors. Constant pressure to bring in new clients. Constant disrespect from a few insecure mid-career advisors, which are best to avoid.

Advice to Management

The new hire manager should be at least five years in the industry or have management (MBA) credentials, and should work to develop individualized marketing and promotion plans with each new advisor.
