I worked at Merrill Lynch as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Opportunity to study what I was interested in; High contact with different FAs; learned a lot using Merrill Lynch's software

Cons

Without knowing what to study it can sometimes be slow; Not as much client interaction as I would have hoped, in terms of investment strategies

I have been working at Merrill Lynch full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Depending on the group where you join, there is a possibility that you'll get to work in good technology. Many a times, particularly for tough projects, when there are no in-house capabilities, Merrill hires consultants from external tech companies as IBM / Microsoft / Tibco - and that's where many things can be acquired. Except for a few groups, work-life balance is pretty decent.

    Cons

The good days of pay & bonus are gone.
You have to align yourself to some influential director / MD - else there is no future. There is very little appreciation for knowledge or your skills - politics and being at the right group are the things that makes a difference.

    Advice to Management

Try to follow the company "Values" that's all over the premises, that would make this company a good place to work.

I have been working at Merrill Lynch full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They provide you with a base salary and they pay you while you get your licenses.

    Cons

The experience was 'too hands off'. I don't like to be micro-managed but I wished there had been more from a macro-managing perspective. The marketing side of the business combined with all the knowledge required is overwhelming to do without guidance.

    Advice to Management

If a person is totally new to Financial Services, establish a mentor or have them join a team.
