Pros

Real effort is taken to inservice employees. Opportunities are made available to interested staff. Support is made available to new teachers through a mentoring program. For out-of-district teachers, up to ten years are taken for salary consideration.

Cons

Difficult to advance to administration. Initiation of MA program at local college means there is a decreased opportunity for some to be considered for a position in administration. Housing in the area has become pretty expensive for a teacher's salary. The district is having issues with overcrowding at some of its schools. The last bond election failed to pass, so no resolution is in sight.

Advice to Management

Keep working on bringing more of an equal sharing of technology (ex, prometheum boards, throughout the district)

I worked at Mesa County Valley School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The students. Most of the teachers and staff support (counselors, instructional aides, librarians, secretaries, health assistants, nurses, etc) are committed people with integrity. The pay is good. Benefits are decent.

    Cons

Administration. Starting at the top down. New superintendent in summer 2017. However, unless he scrubs his whole house the problems won't go away. District 51 keeps ineffective administrators and either shifts them from school to school or promotes them. They give only lip service to teacher complaints about administrators so if you are planning on teaching there, learn to keep your mouth shut, if you come up against a principal or asst. principal who lacks integrity or is lazy or cruel or harassing. Central admin already knows anyway; chances are that person got moved to your building due to similar complaints and the district is just biding time. Admin looks out for admin. Not the people in the trenches with the students. Didn't used to be this way ten, fifteen, twenty years ago in this district. It has really gone down hill in the last few years. RANDA evaluation system is a joke.

    Advice to Management

New superintendent: send out a survey to the staff who work under your administrators and have had experiences with your central administration staff - find out what we really think. You'll find out who you are working with. For the buildings I worked in, there was no real way to evaluate the administrators. Their evaluation was based on their staffs' collective evaluations (if we did good, they were good admin). That's like saying if all my students earn As, I must be a great teacher. The OHI is a million dollar waste of money survey. Dump it. Spend the time reading real comments from the people in the trenches. If admin says, well those few complaints are from disgruntled staff, ask yourself why.
