I worked at Met Office as a contractor

Pros

The Met Office is a good place to work in meteorology or climate research. Living in Devon is nice, especially in the summer months. The Met Office has a cycling and sporting culture.

Cons

The operational side of the business means high security for everyone. This stifles creativity and inhibits research. The open-plan offices result in lots of distractions but few genuine interactions. The Met Office is currently second to ECMWF in medium-range weather forecasting, so the best people go there instead.

Advice to Management

Split the Met Office into separate research and operations sections. Get rid of large, open-plan offices for research. Reduce staff numbers to pay for higher salaries for those who stay.
