I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Extremely smart people who want to work on tough challenges are the norm at Microsoft.

    Cons

Managers are IC's with little time to manage resources and the Culture has been spiraling downhill for some time. It is still possible to get into a great team but you need to be very careful to pick the right one.

    Advice to Management

Collaboration and how to drive a team impact needs to be figured out and recognized above individual impact. Passion and pride needs to happen at the group level just as much as at the corporate level.

I worked at Microsoft as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good perks such as transportation pass, parking, drinks in kitchen and frequent parties.

    Cons

High vender turnover, large bureaucracy, more emphasis on being "at your desk" than getting things done, but this depends on department and manager.

    Advice to Management

Use the FTE's more, and reduce usage of vendors. Create a pathway for vendors to become FTE's. Put more emphasis on getting things done, less on being at your desk. Let mobile vendors be mobile, or give them a desk.
