I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Microsoft puts together a highly structured programs for interns. I received great support and mentorship from my manager(s). Salary and compensation seem to be competitive for the industry.

Cons

Interning in the Bay Area (CA), as opposed to the headquarter (Redmond, WA) limited the range of social activities that were available for the interns.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Constantly working on bleeding edge software with large budgets to support projects
Ability to grow knowledge of various technological disciplines

    Cons

Tons of office politics. Since the reviews are based on a popularity contest is you are not everyone's best friend you get constantly screwed.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the personal review system, base it off of the team's progress and the individuals contribution to the teams success or failure

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Microsoft does lots of things, so there are lots of opportunities.
Microsoft salary and benefits are great.
C# and SQLServer are quality products.

    Cons

The Microsoft Office software development environment is the worst I've seen anywhere. I simply could not get work done in that environment. Way too many people could break my development and test environments, and it happened continuously. I spent almost all of my time overcoming broken development environments so that I could do my work.

    Advice to Management

Fund a total revamp of the Microsoft Office software development and test environments.
Spend money documenting the architecture of your systems and training developers in that architecture, instead of forcing them to learn it on demand. When they learn on demand, they don't learn it well, and this results in increasingly hacked implementations, mountains of bugs, and undependable software from the customer's prospective.
