I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

The brought deadmau5 and Macklemore. Brand new computers and free soda and flexible hours. The perks of the large company are awesome like company events and gym membership.

Cons

Don't pick team/ or project for summer. Most of the products are really boring and as a result the work that they make you do is not interesting.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1. Get to learn a lot.
    2. Great benefits and salary.
    3. The people. Really smart co-workers who are also very caring.
    4. Project was tailored to suit my capability and to challenge me. I came out a much, much better coder. I looked forward to work almost every day.
    5. Work-life balance was amazing. As long as I got my work/meetings done, no one cared when I was coming in or leaving.

    Cons

    1. Setting up takes a long time
    2. Has a rep. for being a big company (?)
    3. Can't really think of anything else--my experience was really positive

    Advice to Management

Be more available. They seemed too busy.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The scale is massive and you learn a lot by building tools from the ground up

    Cons

The stack ranking system can bite you any year. This is regardless of your performance. Because you race with all others with your eye blinded of what they are doing, it is more likely that you miss the bar.

It is all about execution on management's vision and mission. Grass rooting ideas is not as it used to be even in fresh teams like Windows Azure

    Advice to Management

Reduce the size of your teams and allow them to move faster.
Allow program managers to be more forward looking rather than burning them with the unnecessary technical details
