I have been working at Mind Candy full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Some of the most talented and creative people are (or were) at Mind Candy .
All friendly people. Free snacks and nice kitchen. Starters lunch. Fun parties. Good IT technology and computer.

Cons

Really bad management.
All great people have left.
Poor decision with new IP.
No career development.
Negative feeling in atmosphere.
No more passion.
No fun.
Feel bad.

Advice to Management

Many people are leaving and the reason is obvious for the past year. Very quickly change or Mind Candy success will have been for nothing.

    "Incredible people, wasted talent"

    Pros

Cool working environment with fun space. Best thing about this company is their ability to attract incredible people.

    Cons

Overcome by fear of failure, the entrepreneurial phrase "Fail fast" does not apply here. In the past 2 years Mind Candy have been unable to release one mobile title until recently. Employees are driven by fear of getting the boot. The "magic" that the company once had has been diluted by poor managers who do not believe in or respect the people they have hired on for their expertise. Performance reviews are non-existent even when you ask repeatedly for some standard of "success" or way to be promoted.

Every product has been shelved or delayed numerous times and a constant cycle of starting over with never releasing any titles has the company spinning wheels with very low moral.

    Advice to Management

Empower and respect the talent you have before they all wise up and go.

I have been working at Mind Candy full-time

    Pros

Smartest and most creative people I have ever worked with. Everyone is keen to continuously learn, share and improve. And the most friendly and social work place ever.

The company has little bureaucracy that gets in the way and uses best of available tech and tools, and if not quickly changes so that they do.

Free snacks and drinks but that is limited to mostly coffee now. Big communal kitchen table where everyone used to mix and eat lunch together which created a great culture and knowledge share, although now people mostly eat at their desk as too busy.

Has always been able to recruit good people and salaries are very good.

    Cons

There are reasons that this company has a higher turn over of staff than a call centre.

Benefits are non existent. 5 to 8 days less holiday than with competitors. Pensions are not offered.

Whilst senior management do try to communicate openly, they do make some awful decisions, and in the last few years have hired only Silicon Valley background senior managers with similar bad traits and drastically changed the company culture.

The company struggle to be agile or lean, with a lot of micro management, big teams and knee jerk copycat change of directions often mid sprints.

The new culture of frequent prolonged crunch mode has resulted in low quality software and bad company vibe. Partly due to unrealistic hard deadlines pulled out of a woolly hat. A fear of failure postpones or cancels most releases.

    Advice to Management

    Read The Mythical Man Month.
    Read Peopleware.

    - Embrace failure. Release early. Learn, iterate and move on.
    - Get better at people skills.
