I worked at Montreat College full-time

    Pros

Montreat College has always been an incredible place because of its people. It has some of the best faculty, staff, and students and I was honored to be a part of that community.

It offers a quality education. The faculty is stellar and they truly go above and beyond for their students.

Benefits, including paid holidays are a plus.

    Cons

Where to start? Montreat has been plagued with its share of problems over the years, but nothing compares to the issues it is currently facing internally. Not that anyone outside of the college would know because Montreat College PR machine has carefully orchestrated this image of growth, financially stability, unity, etc. Just look at the reviews here, on Glassdoor. Nearly every negative review is followed by glowingly, positive review.

The college has experienced enrollment growth, but the college is struggling to finance that growth. Dormitory and building renovations have been deferred. Students have been moved off campus because there aren’t enough beds on campus. New dorms, classroom facilities, etc., are needed but the funds from donors isn’t coming in quick enough to accommodate the needs. Without donor money, they aren’t financially stable enough to do the necessary repairs, upgrades, and new construction needed to thrive. The college seems unwilling to address these issues as actual issues. Instead they engage in a nonchalant attitude of "it's a good problem to have" and refuse to plan. It is all about the numbers and there is absolutely no care given to the quality of the students' experience at Montreat College.

The absolute root of Montreat's problem is its leadership (or lack thereof). A company is only as strong as its leadership and Montreat College is severely lacking. The college, under its current president, operates under a culture of fear. People are afraid to speak out. Those few that weren’t afraid to speak up were subjected to a form of professional bullying that drove many dedicated, loyal, qualified employees out the door. To be belittled, yelled at, often ignored, and rejected is a defeating feeling. To see it happen to your colleagues is just as hard. Some finally left to seek early retirement or other job opportunities. Others just left.

This type of leadership has a trickledown effect. Many of the key departments are led by people who undervalue and disrespect the employees that have. I was told verbatim, "Everyone is replaceable." Despite the fact that many of the job openings listed on the website are jobs they haven't been able to fill for months. There is no value given to their current employees. As people leave, their jobs are dumped on the remaining employees without compensation. One department in particular has lost seven employees since the end of March, five of those in the last 2 months. Some faculty members are teaching over eight classes a semester and are still spending their free time advising students and making improvements for their program. The ONLY reason Montreat has been successful is because of those people, who work for the betterment of the college and its students. You'll only ever hear about leadership and what they have done to "turn it around", but it's the sacrifice of the people on the ground who are truly responsible. They are never given credit for their dedication and long hours. They are rarely ever compensated or promoted. However, they are the first to be criticized if numbers aren’t met or mistakes are made. There is no grace, no appreciation. They are significantly undervalued for the work that they do.

Also, expecting your employees to sign a community covenant is one thing. Not holding your leadership to the same standards is another. It is hypocritical to call out employees, discredit their faith and morals, all while you practice the same behavior you condemn. If you are truly unaware of the behavior of your department leaders (and I doubt you are), then that brings up another list of issues with the college’s overall leadership. More likely you are turning a blind eye to the obvious.

    Advice to Management

Montreat College has so much going for it and so many wonderful people working there. Actively listen to what it is they need to thrive. Physically they can be replaced, but it is not easy to replace the experience, loyalty, dedication that many of them bring to the table. If your people are happy, you'll see the ROI.
