I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

One of the top firms in the world. Great reputation. Competitive salary for new hires. International opportunities. Great opportunities for growth and learning.

Cons

Once you are hired, they are done paying you. 8 of my 14 years with 0 end of year love. Decisions sometimes take forever. Company "Vision" is not always clear. Compensation is VERY hard to come by. They routinely hire someone off the street at $5K more than the "expert" that's been doing the job for several years.

Advice to Management

Pay your talent.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pro's are the prestige and intelligence associated with working for a firm like Morgan Stanley. You are able to gain a wealth of knowledge just from listening to abstract conversations. The responsibility associated with the job is incredible

    Cons

The visibility from Senior management at the analyst level is as expected. As an analyst you are there to learn, so not much action (respect if you will) is taken to ensure the develpment and growth of the analyst, deppending on the program. Dog eat Dog atmoshere off and on.

    Advice to Management

Management should keep up trying to include all of Morgan Stanley in their surveys, and to keep giving them advice to grow and implement that feedback in their decisions.

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The firm generously provides training and licensing for the FINRA series 7, 66 and 31 (if you want it) as well as state-specific insurance licenses. Culture varies branch-to-branch. Some senior advisers are friendly and helpful - others will never learn your name or say hello. Some fun perks here and there. The name still carries weight with clients.

    Cons

95% failure rate by the first year. It's near impossible to make money and survive the first 1-3 years without being partnered with a senior team. Those opportunities are few and far between. It's the elephant in the room that everyone just ignores. The sales targets are difficult, but it's more of a mercy killing to let the junior FAA go, as they will not be able to support themselves on their earnings anyway for the first few years.

    Advice to Management

I'm grateful for the opportunity that was provided to me. However, it's strange that management knows they have a retention issue, knows how to solve the issue (or work towards it, anyway) and still continues to churn and burn junior FA associates. The flip side? The rest of the industry should be grateful to the wires for providing them with an endless stream of already-licensed junior associates.
