I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Morgan Stanley is improving with each quarter. If you want to do Asset Management, whether it be Private Wealth Management or Institutional, this is the place to do it.

Cons

It's hard to get recognized at a big firm. Building your networks takes considerable time and energy.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work environment is light, but a lot is expected. Mostly young coworkers, perfect for postgrad life in a new city. Personal development is a priority for managers. Great location between two of the nicest parts of Baltimore.

    Cons

Tasks are mostly the same everyday. and become frustrating when internal systems have no OJT manual and no expert. Internal systems are antiquated, and support services are almost exclusively outsourced.

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent brand recognition, great way to start a career or move a career forward. There are a lot of very smart people in the organization to learn from. Good compensation package, benefits, vacation days.

    Cons

Morgan Stanley like any investment bank is not for someone looking for a 9-5 job. You need to be able to dedicate substantial hours to company, but possibly somewhat fewer hours than Goldman Sachs or Citigroup. The company size may be a negative for some people, because like other large companies Morgan Stanley has a "meeting culture" - there are a lot of meetings and it takes a while to get anything executed. Getting promoted to higher levels is a bit political and requires you to have a strong network and strong champions/references.

    Advice to Management

Encourage more hiring from within, lateral moves and mobility so that employees don't need to look elsewhere. Try to encourage and reward fewer, more focused meetings and more execution.
