I have been working at Motorola Mobility full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Since Google acquisition, much higher emphasis on bringing in better talent in product management, engineering management, design. Products are much higher quality now, exciting to use and show the marketplace real innovations. Stability of Google leadership / funding has helped once Motorola was bought. Decent work/life balance, but this depends on your role. Software product management has massively improved. Some products now proudly made in the US. State of the art new worksite in downtown Chicago being built (finally shutting down outdated workspace in the remote suburb of Illinois). Business processes have simplified and clarified. If you can deal with constant flux, have a strong independent leadership gene you can achieve success and get recognized.

Cons

Motorola is separately managed form Google, too little integration happening between them. Other teams at Google may be working on what Motorola is too, the difference is: the Google team will know, while the Motorola team will be kept in the dark. There is no 'grand plan' long term, feels made up as it goes. For being owned by Google (where cost is no object to just about any initiative or facility), Motorola is surprisingly cheap. Google employees you work next to get benefits and privileges not available to Motorola employees. Creates a 2-class system, if you are from Motorola to the average Googler you're perceived to be at an immediate disadvantage by default. There is an advanced tech team that does cool experimental work but is sequester‎ed from the rest of the company (with a deliberately separatist identity), making it even more culturally fragmented. Engineering talent is uneven, but some clearly amazing talent, but needs more. Real risk taking is not as culturally encouraged as you might expect.

Advice to Management

Outline a future roadmap for Motorola that grows into beyond selling more phones and some accessories though existing channels. What's the bigger picture and how does the company reach profitability vs. Apple and Samsung? Discuss how Motorola is being evaluated by Google leadership more specifically, and what a future with Google holds that's more disruptive beyond just lowering the sale price.
