I worked at Mount Sinai Health System full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

There are many others who you can share your trauma and grief. You'll learn how to deal with bullying bosses. You'll learn how to work with no self respect and self esteem. Low pay but good retirement benefits. Good health plan too.

Cons

Management from the top down just plain stinks. There are a few bright stars in management but they are squashed promptly. It's a lot like a multi level marketing scheme in that the managers really believe they are smart and are doing the right thing. But they are only doing the right thing for themselves. Human resources and the advocacy they give is atrocious.

Advice to Management

Eliminate yourself first. Then those below you. Take classes on leadership and problem solving. If you think you're a good manager, you're not. Spend a week in the shoes of your workers and listen to those who actually do the work you think you know how to do. When people who have been at Mount Sinai for 20 years suddenly leave, there is something wrong- and that something wrong is probably you.

    Pros

    -Health benefits (Union)
-Great location (near South St Seaport)

    Cons

    -job function lacks cerebral stimulation
-lack of formal training protocol (no training at all, really)

    Advice to Management

The saying 'you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar' comes to mind. Senior management seems to value the ability to control employees over production/revenue enhancement. I attended a Unit meeting that was about not being able to use headphones, limiting trips to the bathroom, and not having conversations with other employees. That meeting should have been about ways to increase revenue. It's sad, and demeaning, of course.
