I have been working at Muscular Dystrophy Association full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You work with amazing families and awesome sponsors. There is a fantastic mission and huge strides in research in the past few years. Its fast paced and fun and promotes a team atmosphere!

    Cons

I started here at the beginning of the recession. They instituted a salary freeze 6 years ago and it hasn't been lifted. Its difficult to be great at your job and not compensated for it. There also is a very cookie cutter path for promotions that doesn't fit everyone's goals. Its either a management position or you sit in entry level.

    Advice to Management

It was a great decison to bring in Steve Derks, he has really strengthened the association and has "righted the ship" so to speak. However, they really need to listen to the ground level employees more and bring back the salary raise for staff to at least apply for.

I worked at Muscular Dystrophy Association full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with great sponsors such as the IAFF, Volunteer Fire Departments, and Shamrock accounts that you build.

    Cons

A deflated development portfolio. The company spends a lot of money and staff time to hire, train and retain temporary employed individuals to run a call center for a program that worked in 1980's but is not relevant in the East Coast market in 2014. Another issue with this company is the way it treats their employees. You are considered to be a sales person without the benefits. You don't receive any commission for accounts that you land and you are required to land a lot. Also, upper management is very passive-aggressive and mixed messages float from the top on down.

    Advice to Management

Revamp your development platform and make it more relevant. You are losing money hand-over-fist due to the fact that between the VP of the Region and your Executive Director you have over 20 individuals who all have outdated information and should be removed to help save the company since you are constantly complaining how broke MDA is.
