I worked at NASA Ames Research Center as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

I had a friendly and supportive boss. My department was laid back.

It was difficult for me to find work, as an intern. I felt that they did not know what to do with me.

I have been working at NASA Ames Research Center as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

People are nice, or at least they try to be polite outwardly. There is a collegial atmosphere, if you are into that sort of things. Obviously, working for NASA also looks great on the resume.

    Cons

The skill level of the software engineers are actually not that high. Most of the time, one guy does most of the work while all the other people bicker over trivial stuffs at meetings and engage in political in-fightings. It's one of those things where people on the outside think it would be great to work for NASA, but people on the inside know better. Job security is next to none if you are a contractor as it really depends on your federal group lead's political connections. If you are a full time federal employee, the pay is lower than in the private industry, but it's almost impossible to fire you even if you sleep on the job.

    Advice to Management

Too much bureaucracy, but that's not ever going to change for a behemoth that's too big to fail.
