JPL Postdoc
Postdoctoral Research AssociateFormer Employee, more than 1 yearPasadena, CAPros
Technically no pros. The worst place that I have been!
Cons
Securing funding can pose challenges, particularly for international scholars on a J-1 visa, as there is a possibility of it being abruptly discontinued during the intended duration. It is important to manage expectations, as completion of a postdoc program at JPL does not guarantee a full position there. Additionally, one might experience a sense of isolation due to limited collaboration opportunities with other teams. Moreover, the stipend provided is insufficient for a comfortable living, making it difficult to cope with the high cost of living. If you plan to relocate with your family, residing in Pasadena might present additional difficulties, given the exorbitant rental prices, and your salary may not cover the expenses of an older one-bedroom apartment. Also, I was abused to work free (no payment) after my leave to complete some publication work and at the end, I ended up with nothing!

Pros
The people who work there are amazing and so capable and helpful, for the most part, aside from the occasional big ego. Unparalleled level of intellect and expertise in many areas. The campus is old but beautiful. Benefits are competitive for the industry. 9/80 schedule is fire.
Cons
Too many "battlefield promotions" resulting in a lot of leaders who belong in technical roles, not leadership. Many practices and systems are political, bureaucratic and antiquated - feels like the 80s in many ways. Space exploration is full of calculated risks but that mentality isn't allowed to bleed into business processes. I've never experienced a more risk-averse environment.
