    I worked at NESN full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, good culture, outside of downtown Boston with plenty of parking.

    Cons

Limited opportunity for internal growth, highly competitive, no work/life balance, zero retention of top-tier employees

    Advice to Management

There's more to a quality work environment other than a healthy bottom line. Too many closed doors. Not enough open dialogue between management and employees. Fear is not inspiring.

I worked at NESN full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are nice and the benefits are good.

    Cons

There isn't much work for a web developer at NESN. The crux of the job is to teach and re-teach marketing and sales how to use tools they themselves ought to be familiar with. NESN.com is a WordPress blog. If you're a web developer I advise steering clear of WordPress as it's a frustrating codebase to work in.

The compensation is terrible. If you ask for a raise you won't get it (which is the norm across all organizations these days). I didn't realize how poorly some employees were paid until I revisited Glassdoor 2 years after I quit. You will need roommates or supplemental income to live in the Boston area on a NESN salary.

Management will not reveal NESN's revenue. This is the only company I've worked at that doesn't share financials. It makes you feel like a second-class employee.

Attrition rate is high. If there's an NHL or MLB lockout it will affect you. It's a traditional corporate culture: men have to wear slacks, dress shirt and a necktie.

NESN is in a boring office park in Watertown. The best way to get there is to drive yourself. The only public transportation available is a bus.

NESN.com subsists off of advertisement revenue. Adoption rate of ad blockers continue to grow and since iOS 9 developers may create native extensions for Safari to block ads and third-party content. Aside from selling content I don't know how NESN.com will overcome this.

And on the TV side: ESPN has lost just under 1.2 million subscribers in October and November of 2016. This indicates a trend that viewers are not willing to pay through the nose for live programming.

    Advice to Management

There's not much you can do since you're at the mercy of the FSG, the leagues and cable affiliates. So, good luck!
