    Pros

This is a huge community of scientists with tons of resources, from the headquarters of PubMed on site to great equipment and support staff for all your experimental needs. It's well known worldwide and the name alone commands respect. Funding for intramural research can be generous, and PIs do not have to write grants.

    Cons

There are so many legal and administrative hurdles to working for a government research lab that they often outweigh the pros. Rules on IT use, travel, even what gifts you can give other employees are all very strict but hard to fully understand. Even simple purchases have to go through at least 3 administrators to be approved.

    Advice to Management

Expand the focus of NIH to include more biotechnology and biomedical engineering topics. While NIH is strong on immunology, cancer, genetics and neuroscience, some cross-disciplinary fields are absent from the campus.

    Pros

great balance between work and personal life
    stress-free working environment
open culture to people from all backgrounds
    the campus is smoking-free

    Cons

low salaries even compared to other NIH institutes.
    old building and equipment
needs core facilities to keep up with high tech
    needs better communication between labs

    Advice to Management

invest more on core facilities to keep up with high tech.
hire people with more diverse academic back-grounds.
you should definetely consider to hire less people but pay more to employees, so that they can really focus on their projects.
