Pros

Innovative ideas and mission; extremely educated and talented workforce; promotions based on performance and merit; great location

Cons

If you don't have a science background, the opportunities are limited; alternative work schedules aren't widely used; it's a federal agency, so it can be bureaucratic and change is slow.

Advice to Management

Continue to find alternative and creative ways to reward employees when awards/bonuses and COLAs are prohibited in the federal government.

I worked at NSF full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Has various benefits ( if they let you use them when you want/need to). Very good location. Some people are very nice, most people are helpful to provide support when you need it. They offer a lot of training opportunities for job specific tasks.

    Cons

I can only comment on my experience there. Some directorates/floors have a lot of "drama or personal" issues that gets to the point where people act unprofessional and hinders work. On these same floors there is a lot of favoritism, and people on these floors seem to be very rude, and degrading to some people who have a Master's Degree or less. A lot of the support employees have overwhelming work, and if you do not have a Masters degree or less there is little room for advancement. There are some great places and offices to work in, however the offices that lack employee satisfaction or morale are the ones that need a lot of improvement ( hopefully it will get there). There are wonderful people here, however there are also people lack respect to subordinates.

    Advice to Management

I would focus on employee moral , and satisfaction of problem offices, especially the support staff.
