I worked at NYU (New York University) part-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

It is great to work for new york university technical support. The best part is that you have freedom to do what you want while on the Job since you have to walk to location of the pc repair.

Cons

This job could pay more. it is a little difficult to advance to an upper position. you do not get to have an office just for you since its shared with the other technicians.

Advice to Management

Keep doing a good job. Pay a little more.

I have been working at NYU (New York University) part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They are really good at working around everyone's class schedule. In addition if you have a hard paper or exam you need to study for you can almost always get a day off to study. Provided you don't do it too often.

    Cons

The work can be very repetitive and boring.

I worked at NYU (New York University) part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Good pay for the hour
    - Adjuncts are unionized, so you'll get some benefits and protection
    - Professional development fund for adjuncts ($1,000 a year)
    - Subsidized insurance after three semesters
    - Overall cool and helpful colleagues
    - Great coordinators
    - Mostly great students
    - Ability to be creative and design curriculum
    - Huge semester breaks
    - Looks good on resume for the first part of your career and staying for two years will give you a lot of exit options
    - Great job for a grad student
    - Access to awesome resources at NYU, plus discounted tickets to movies and plays
    - You can get a lot of work

    Cons

    - No real room to move up, full-time positions only open up sporadically
    - No guarantee you'll be promoted to full-time and many teachers have been adjuncts for 10+ years
    - Full-time lecturers have anemic salaries, so even making full-time doesn't provide a big pay boost. If you've been teaching a lot (20 hours/week), you might even take a pay-cut.
    - Inflexible enrollment dates for health insurance, so you may have to wait close to two years until it kicks in. Plus, you still have to pay about $200/mo for it.
    - If you teach three sections per semester (Spring, Fall, Summer) at 16 contact hours per week, you'll probably still make under $50,000/year
    - Teaching in an intensive setting can be exhausting. You'll get a lot of time off, but your time "on" will be very demanding.
    - As mentioned in "Pros," huge breaks...that are unpaid (the con). No paid vacation at all.
    - You have to reschedule any classes you cancel. There are no allotted sick days and you cannot get someone to substitute unless you're hospitalized or on jury duty.
    - Adjunct "track" in general is pretty tough, as universities are increasingly relying on adjuncts and part-time/contract staff. I would not recommend getting sucked into this.
    - As mentioned in "Pros," you can get a lot of work...but adjuncts are basically used as full-time staff minus the benefits (the con).

    Advice to Management

As adjuncts are paid almost as much as full-time instructors, hire more full-timers.
