I have been working at NYU (New York University) as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

Very good pay, decent students

Cons

No benefits, unfortunately, and university leadership is off doing their own thing on other continents leaving adjuncts without health insurance.

I have been working at NYU (New York University) full-time

    Pros

Nice collegues, great community at faculty housing

    Cons

    1) horrible salaries. My husband and I are assist. Professors and cannot make the ends meet with only one kid.
    2) a small group of people are favored and lots of deals happen behind closed doors. there is absolutely no transparency. It is clear that the a few people can work the system and are well treated at the expense of the rest of the faculty, which creates an unjust environment,
    3) no respect from administration. They do not care about the well being of the faculty.
    4) faculty housing works independently like any New York real estate company. For example, we have been here for 2.5 years. First couple years no rent increase. Our rent was increased 11% this year. First year I had no salary raise. Second year 2.5%. So In the past couple years my salary was practically cut, because rent is about 40% of my salary after tax. I sometimes feel like I am working in a mining town in 1800s owned by the company.

If I had known all this, I would have taken my other offer two years ago. With little support to have a good career, and without a good career, I fear that i will remain stuck here
