Negative Outlook

I worked at National Autistic Society full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Provides support to some of the most disadvantaged people in the UK. Peer support generally good. Many staff committed to supporting the people who use the services.

Cons

Highly stressful environment, senior management/board out of touch with what happens in services and schools. Minimal supervision of service leaders by their managers mean issues such as poor management practice never addressed, and bullying is unfortunately commonplace among management. Expected to work above and beyond constantly, not just for exceptional circumstances. Stress-related illnesses not taken seriously.

Advice to Management

Listen to your staff, don't allow "cash-cow" services to operate unsupervised. Take note of indicators such as high staff turnover and high levels of mental ill health within specific teams, and manage effectively. Don't turn a blind eye. Stop overworking managers and staff and you'll get better overall results. Stop treating complex services across the UK like a 9-5 office in London.

Advice to trustees: have more oversight of your directors and get further industry/specialist knowledge before approving significant changes.
