I have been working at National Defence and the Canadian Forces full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Provides great opportunities, especially for students out of school with no experience, the department will take you and give you a chance to learn, get experience and train you on many aspects. - Most people are great, friendly and helping in the CAF. By far the best aspect of working in the Armed Forces is the people you'll meet and the network you'll make.

    Cons

    - Excessively bureaucratic machine will crush the most innovative mind and idealists. - Nothing gets done without 4 level of approvals, new ideas, i.e. risky ideas often are discarded quickly by fear they may cause unneeded trouble. - Huge inefficiencies which will waste time and cause large amount of frustration to people who seek to improve things and processes. - Senior management is often fossilized and cannot adapt quickly to change or new technologies.

    Advice to Management

    - Too many layers of unnecessary middle management creating unjustified processes - Excessive amount of red tape and rigid applications of old rules are causing large amount of frustration in the most talented individuals, causing them to leave and thus, a stagnant environment.

I worked at National Defence and the Canadian Forces full-time

    Pros

More opportunity, professional development, and world-wide experience than I ever though possible, particularly when I was 19 years old and thought I knew everything but realized quickly how wrong I was! Excitement, word class training followed by experience in a related field. The opportunity to develop constantly and get promoted at regular intervals in rank, salary, and responsibility is unmatched anywhere in the world. In a world where there still exists job discrimination and pay discrimination based on sex, this is the only true equal opportunity where you are paid according to your qualifications, period.

    Cons

You must accept that you are not entirely in control of your destiny. Don't fight it, this is actually a good thing. It's hard on families from time to time but the pros far outweigh the cons in every respect.

    Advice to Management

Better alignment of policies and practices with individual's desires would improve retention rates.
