I worked at Navy Exchange part-time (More than a year)

Pros

-they prefer to promote within
-easy to get time off
-increase in pay every few years
-lots of different cultures work here

Cons

-can be very cliquish
-workers frequently marry/date management, which causes friction
-it's nearly impossible to get fired
-you are required to take back ALL merchandise, practically. No matter how long it's been since the customer had it and (clearly) wore it or used it.

I worked at Navy Exchange full-time

    Pros

Access to the Navy Exchange, no tax on purchases. Work/Life balance.

    Cons

All employees, except for salaried managers are Union. Lack of recognition for major accomplishments and positive changes.

    Advice to Management

Weigh out the pros and cons of your managers and support them. Leave out your personal "feelings" and be a professional. Look out for the best interest of the company and recognize when you need to step up and protect those who support you.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Navy Exchange full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Able to move up within.
Alot of cross learning, open door, communication.
Lots of holidays off, great vacation time.
Respect and opportunities if you work hard and show capability and a good attitude. Some cases of favoritism, but others of true respect based on merit.

    Cons

As with any company depends on the team you work under, how much growth potential you have.
Pay raises few and far between, relatively no step structure for experienced vs new promotion; you can only negotiate a higher income when first being offered the job, so other than the meek yearly merit increases a seasoned buyer/planner does not make that much more than one just promoted.

    Advice to Management

Instead of just paying lip service to supporting military spouses and offering them opportunity, actually do it.
