Pros

Purina has some great employees. Typically they are very intelligent and work well with others. Management is very supportive in promoting employees to be proactive and do work "outside of the box." There are also many young engineers, as well as older engineers who are willing to help.

Cons

Salaries are somewhat low, though perhaps in line with other food companies. Though lower than higher profile industries. Additionally, depending on where you are placed, plant locations are not ideal.

Advice to Management

Management should further push employee advancement and try to improve senior management accessibility for employees that typically have limited interaction with senior management.

    Pros

Minimal politics for such a large company, there's a reasonable work/life balance for folks, most everyone is really nice, and we compete in a great category.

    Cons

The pay is average, but stress is relatively low. People never leave, so there's not a lot of opportunity to grow or move around. If you're ready to get your last job (that you'll have for a long time) and want to be paid fairly (but not handsomely) Purina's your place. There's very little bad, but nothing great about it either.

    Advice to Management

Fight commoditization at all costs and limit the red tape.

    Pros

    Good benefits, pension, work/life balance
Perks like the company store, gym, and credit union
A lot of training classes are offered

    Cons

Some departments do not pay very well
Not a lot of advancement opportunities
Political, a lot of times it depends on who you know to get ahead

    Advice to Management

Offer a mentor program or at least communicate career paths. HR focuses a lot of time on recruiting external candidates and doesn't care as much about the employees it already has.
