I worked at NetApp as an intern (More than a year)

Pros

Smart, smart individuals. The team I worked with was brilliant and was way ahead of any other company in that same field. If you like structure, it's there.

Interns & employees get to use the gym and there's free food once in a while. The campus is huge and the VTA is across the street from the main building. The cafeteria food tastes a lot better than many other companies'.

Cons

NetApp loves to talk about how great of a place it is to work, however, it pales in comparison to companies with more liberal cultures like Google or LinkedIn.

The opportunities to grow or move around the company are not very apparent. Teams within the same organization aren't very collaborative and your ability to do something is often swayed by politics. While there is structure, processes dictate everything.

For the younger employees, it can be a restricting environment. Most of the employee population are in their 30s-50s. Overall, the culture is quite conservative.

    Pros

Great CEO, aspire to be a good culture, exceptional technical talent

    Cons

Remarkable success story, but now suffering from big company syndrome. Over the years, as storage startups have come and gone, NTAP has become a place for the survivors to flock to as one of the last few pure storage companies. As a result, it has become top heavy with senior leaders trying to build their careers and more and more energy is spent focusing on internal politics vs how to survive in the era of the Third Platform. Founders have slowly faded into the background. Missed the flash array first wave now playing catch-up. Every acquisition became something to suck into ONTAP vs thrive on its own, and now ONTAP as a delivery vehicle for IP is much too laden. ESG nice try, but their technology also becoming irrelevant to data center. Now, too expensive to play in the data center and SMB flocking to cloud so entry suffering. Billions spent on Clustered ONTAP - perhaps finally paying off but fighting cheap server scale-out in data centers. Like the server incumbents, disruption coming from places they never dreamed.

    Advice to Management

Get while the gettin's good. Take a tip from EMC and let your acquisitions truly diversify the company, not homogenize it. The ONTAP power brokers need to retire.

I have been working at NetApp full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The technology is cool and exciting, if a bit slow to be adopted. Co-workers are still enthusiastic. You feel like you're working for the "good guys".

    Cons

Lack of management vision, big company bureaucracy is creeping in.
Force you to spend your vacation time during two shutdown weeks.

    Advice to Management

Culture is falling apart and upper management's words ring hollow with the employees.
