Pros

Great people and opportunities. Great leadership provided by Senior Engineers. The pay is competitive and the benefits are good. Many good people have been attracted to NetApp, because of the "Great Places to Work" ratings.

Cons

Culture is being eroded by politics and layers of less than effective directors and VPs. Most of the good technical directors have left the company leaving behind technical leaders who are more political motivated than technically savvy.

I worked at NetApp full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good work-life balance, stable place to work (except around quarter-end). Used to be a great culture but lost its way after CEO Dan and CFO Steve left a couple years ago.

    Cons

Lots of the driven, high-achieving people have left. Serious people remain, the people with a sense of humor have gradually left. Doesn't seem to have the same sense of urgency it used to. Lost its soul a few years ago, lost its way toward growth around the same time. Good stable place to work, tho.

    Advice to Management

Get to know the people in the lower levels of the organization again, and not just the engineers. Find out what people really think about what could be done to turn things around.

    Pros

Love working with intelligent and motivated employees and managers. People are passionate and eager to "do the right thing" for their work and the company. A number of perks in the workplace including onsite gyms, lunch halls, and volunteer time off.

    Cons

Communication fails consistently throughout the organization. Poor planning and rushing to execution create unfortunate quality concerns. Performance management process pits team members against one another and politics amongst management prevents genuine and authentic people from succeeding.

    Advice to Management

Reach out to your line level employees. Understand what drives the employees who build, test, sell, and support our products. Do not take too few data points and create generalizations that support a view. Take time to understand your workforce.
