I have been working at NetBrain Technologies full-time (More than a year)

Pros

The technology behind the product is unparalleled and constantly improving. With it, the business is growing by leaps and bounds. Confidence in the company's growth has been bolstered by a recent infusion from the largest VC in the country. Having the opportunity to grow with a company and be part of the transition from startup towards IPO isn't an opportunity many people will have in their careers.

The employees are great to work with and the senior management is passionate, energetic, and enthusiastic - traits which are contagious. As the company grows, so do opportunities. Hard work and results are appreciated and rewarded.

Cons

With a fast-paced company and constant change comes ever-shifting priorities on various projects. Sometimes it's difficult to perfect a project as it can be dropped for another priority. This can affect morale and sense of accomplishment.

Advice to Management

Define clear goals and trust in your leadership team to execute and achieve them, while fostering open communication and constructive feedback.

    I worked at NetBrain Technologies full-time

    Pros

    Unique technology that had few direct competitors, U.S. based employees were all great and were willing to help in any way they could.

    Cons

    CEO doesn't listen to anyone and was not open to suggestions (we already tried that and it didn't work attitude), little to no funds were spent on marketing efforts (except for Cisco Live), extremely limited benefits, management was paranoid about employee loyalty (was asked if I was a spy for my previous employer when I left), minimal resources to do your job with and expectations that you can do it anyways and then had to justify everything you were doing. Some of it may have been cultural, losing face etc.. but the difference in how U.S. employees were treated vs Chinese employees was apparent and highly discourteous. If you don't tow the line, you are out the door. They have gone through 4 marketing people since 2010.

    Advice to Management

    Improve benefits package, treat U.S. employees with more respect, CEO needs to be more receptive to suggestions and alternative perspectives, listen to the people you hire for their expertise (you wouldn't have hired them in the first place if they were not experts)! Ideally, the CEO should move into a role that is more technical and a CEO that has the business acumen to realize the potential of the company and technology should be brought in.

    I have been working at NetBrain Technologies full-time

    Pros

    --Solid technology with a great niche product, overall outlook is very positive
    --Colleagues are smart and helpful
    --Work-from-home during snowstorms
    --Free lunch (half healthy/half not)

    Cons

    --Benefits are extremely weak:
    1) only 1 health insurance plan to choose from and only contribute half of total costs, making it very expensive for individual and even more expensive for families, most employees rely on their spouses for insurance if they have the choice

    2) 30 minute lunch - it is the first tech company out of many I have worked for that limits lunch hour to half an hour, employees should not be treated like they are in kindergarten, kindergarteners get a longer lunch?

    3) no flexible spending account, no short term/long term insurance, no paternity/maternity leave, 401K does not match, vacation policy is just 2 weeks and need to be there for quite some time to get more, no tuition reimbursement; weight loss benefits are included by the health plan and gym is in the complex/building (not extras)

    --Departments/cubicles are very close together making it very noisy at times to concentrate or when speaking on the phone

    --Free snacks are great except that most are twinkies and donuts or potato chips/junk food, do get sugary fruits like bananas and oranges at times but still most are very unhealthy junk food

    -- if you are not part of a team, don't expect orientation to the company or product offering, you're expected to be fully contributing from day 1 or 2 with little initial guidance/tips but expected to have known what you weren't told to deliver or meet deadlines

    --Not all but most management staff lacks in-depth management experience in leading particular departments

    --Upper management is friendly but generally not conducive to suggestions and lacks non-technical leadership experience compared to other C-level management I have worked with in the past

    Advice to Management

    It is nice to hire on potential and give people the chance to do something different with their careers or to get into a leadership or expanded role, and to do that, they will overlook the weak benefits for the chance to start on a new career or a new sector. But in time, once their skills and experiences are building up, they will see the discrepancies between wanting to keep good people and actually doing something about it in action. Other companies with better compensation and benefits and overall company culture and management will easily lure them away. It is cheaper to keep an employee than to hire a brand new one, and good company culture and benefits are crucial.
