Pros

Awesome teachers, great students, but all this depends on where you're working in the system.

Cons

Some schools harass teachers, others don't care about students, and others are just concerned about making their AYP.

I worked at New York City Department of Education full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with kids is one of the most rewarding things you can do with your life. Teaching a class of students is an amazing opportunity.

    Cons

Special education teachers are chronically overworked and given sub-standard materials, as well as little to no practical instruction on how to do their jobs. Most people working as classroom teachers feel like little more than babysitters.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, Improve your curriculum, and become familiar with the actual meanings of "data-based" and "best practices"/

I worked at New York City Department of Education full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The health benefits are fantastic and cover full medical, dental, vision and prescription benefits. School year calenders come out well in advance of each year, which makes schedule planning much easier. The more education you earn, the higher your pay scale. There are many opportunities for professional development both within the Department of Education as well as with partners such as local museums and universities.

    Cons

School quality varies wildly depending on the principal and student population. Discipline issues are rampant in some places with very little support from the district. While the pay scale is competitive nationally, it is low for the area. Standardized testing is the norm, and teachers are often encouraged to 'teach to the test'.

    Advice to Management

Creating standard curriculum support across the district would go a long way to making sure students are engaged and on track even if they change schools.
