I have been working at New York City Department of Education full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Great job for family orient people. You can retire with a pension, hopefully. You do have a get a lot of vacation time if you, do not have to work or go to school.

Cons

Its a tough job. You need to have a lot of education and credentials. It a thankless job and you do not get enough respect.

I have been working at New York City Department of Education full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The retirement package is reasonablea and you can edge out a decent work/life balance.

    Cons

As far as central administration goes it is an open secret of the institutional (and overt) racism that occurs there . . . Blacks and Latinos beware!!!! Raises and promotions are for mainly for Whites, Jews and (some) Asians. Cronyism is rampant and competency is not the top priority of the leadership. Hyper-political work environment (this is referring to Tweed HQ near Brooklyn Bridge). Unionized employees that are fortunate enough to work in the schools and district branch offices generally do face not the same rotten atmosphere that exists in the central office (Tweed Courthouse).

    Advice to Management

Start staffing the headquarters with people who are educators . loomberg leaves office this will change . . .
