You get to do work that directly benefits and empowers students. The sheer size and diversity within the system means that you can try out a range of school models and cultures, and there are a variety of career paths to pursue within the system. Lots of talented committed employees at all levels of the DOE; students are inspiring.
Central office is extremely political with limited growth opportunities. It’s nearly impossible to get fired, so there are plenty of toxic, lazy, or incompetent people in the system. Morale was abysmal in the last year thanks to the in-office mandate and the cronyism and incompetence of the Adams/Banks administration. Very little hiring in central DOE right now but that’s ok because it’s currently a hot mess.Continue reading
