I have been working at New York Civil Service full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Professional job with chance for advancement and opportunity to serve youth and adults with disabilities in a systemic manner improving access to their educations.

    Cons

Morale is low due to work volume and need for reorganization of support staff structure and tasks. Consider better access to flexible schedules for computer based jobs to include telecommuting from home 2-4 days per week. This is currently not allowed even for health reasons. For work that is so computer based and can essentially be done anywhere there is wifi there must be a way to measure accountability to allow for this more personal and family friendly concept

    Advice to Management

Hire more persons of middle or late middle age and more women. Consider experience that is cross correlated and community experience as well as education.

    Pros

    benfits
    work-life balance
    substantively interesting work
    retirement package

    Cons

the executive deputy superintendent is incompetent and unqualified for her role
    excessive turnover among deputy superintendents
extensive reivew of everything by legal is intended to shield the exec dep from responsibility for decisions but slows everything down

    Advice to Management

this review is about the department of financial services banking division, because there's a job posting from banking that appears under new york state department of civil service. this is the old New York State Banking Department.

banking - you can not continue to marginalize experienced career staff with lawyers lawyers and more lawyers, at least not ones that don't know what they're doing. your banking exec deps have been one worse than the next. the experience and knowledge of your career staff is ignored or viewed as counterindication of what to do. the whole place is grinding to a halt.
