Former Employee - Sales Development Manager in Dallas, TX

I worked at New York Life full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Excellent training for this position and agents. I think the newer management at the top is headed in the right direction. They let you know that you are valuable if you are doing a good job. The meetings at a regional level have a very positive vibe to them.

Cons

Local level mgmt can be a challenge. There needs to be a more consistent message instead of a new plan every 4 weeks. More big picture planning would help. Some offices are highly successful at this while some seem to repeat the same missteps.

Advice to Management

Keep the partners and development managers working together and success will happen. Too often they are at odds. A good salesperson is not automatically a good manager.

I worked at New York Life as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The constant classes to fill you with knowledge
    The friendly management
The products are excellent, they really are out to help people
Colleagues at NYL are there to help you, as a worker, as well

    Cons

The job of an agent isn't really the best to be in, but that is only my opinion. It is lucrative, but it depends on your personality and it is not for everyone.

I have been working at New York Life full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great products, helping others, great training

    Cons

Sell sell, sell, micromanagement, transparency, expected to bleed blue, promote based on numbers not on competency

    Advice to Management

Turnover is extraordinary - could it be because you don't care about the individual employee, just the number of applications???
