I worked at New York Life as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

You're in business for yourself. A lot of freedom and flexibility. Excellent training program. High growth potential. Your clients are yours, not the company's.

Cons

On your own, need a good book of business to start. Some up-front costs. You are always working, maybe not in the office, but on an everyday basis.

    Pros

    Unlimited earning potential.
    Flexible hours.
You're working for an amazing company who loves its agents and compensates them while for helping families and individuals protect and save for the future.

    Cons

No leads and salary, but their ability to help you find leads and the unlimited earning potential make up for that.

I have been working at New York Life full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

New York Life has a great training program. It is a solid company finacially, people recognize the name and respect it. Good place to enter the financial services industry, get your licenses, learn selling,

    Cons

After six months, the company charges for the cube, phone, computer center, technology, mail box, costs are about $350.00 per month. If you have some sales fall off, and you will, its easy to be negative on your ledger. You will be pressured to sell to your friends and family, your "natural market", so people you know will stop taking your calls. They try to position the job as financial planning but in the end it is insurance sales. Every concept is handled with an insurance product. The company makes it seem like they are selective about who they bring on but they will hire anyone without a criminal past. It is a revolving door, many people leave within the first year, even people with over two years leave so it is not just new people who couldn't cut it. Desperation is the fuel that drives most of the people there. Most people are not making much money. I am nine months in and am looking to get out!

    Advice to Management

Be more selective with who is hired, pay them a declining salary to help them get going, stop charging people to use the office.
