I worked at New York Times full-time

Pros

Smart, interesting & diverse colleagues
great work-life balance
nice building
cafeteria & illy coffee bar

Cons

management is very top heavy
they promote favorites regardless of ability
if you're not one of the favorites you need to leave the company for growth opportunity
extremely high turnover, resulting in advertisers who never seem to know who to call and a lot of time wasted transitioning accounts
managers are adamant you follow an antiquated sales process that results in more work, less time to use modern communication (email)
sales goals are given 6 weeks into the quarter and based on your first half performance, therefore they are tougher to achieve (and less payout from NYT)
it is a union job and there is a lot of friction between the union and management

Advice to Management

Scare techniques don't work on sales people. A little kindness and genuine enthusiasm for your team will result in a motivated group willing to go above and beyond on the job.

    Pros

Smart people, best news organization in the world. Terrific opportunities, sad that the revenue model for the industry is broken.

    Cons

Not always a meritocracy. Can be sludgy and bureaucratic. Would be helpful if people switched jobs more often to change perspectives.
