Pros

Generally a very positive place to work. Company had solid ehtics and principles and tried to live by them. The people were good and decent and always tried to help. Stock performance was usually quite good. Company has a solid future.

Cons

Bureaucracy. Slow and ponderous to make change sometimes. Believed itself too much and wasn't critical enough of its processes. Needs to take a hard look at some of the senior managers from outside their paradigm of being the best company in Canada.

Advice to Management

Deal with the poor morale beginning to brew within the rank and file.

    Pros

Good pay while you are there. Nice office.

    Cons

Nexen was an excellent Canadian based company until 2013. Then CNOOC bought it. The majority of CNOOC (Chinese National Offshore Oil Corp) stock is owned (and the company is therefor controlled by) the People's Republic of China (yes - the government).
The USA government imposed stringent access restrictions on CNOOC's acquisition of Nexen, which have caused CNOOC to regularly order deep layoffs at Nexen at least once or twice each year since 2013, along with deep budget cuts. Employees there expect budget cuts and layoff rounds to continue and most have their resumes updated.

    Advice to Management

To USA management - be honest and transparent with employees on their prospects of continued long term employment. Find yourself another job, because you too will be cut eventually.
To CNOOC management - I understand you dislike the USA restrictions that prevent you from touching or visiting your US properties, but you have cut staff down as far as you can without adversely affecting your US investments. Stop and think before you order another X% headcount reduction or you will lay off critical staff which will cost you dearly.
