I have been working at Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It varies from person to person depending upon assigned task and support staff around them. Some may get technical job and some managerial job. However, I was assigned technical job.

    My Experience :
    # Support staff - Very cooperative subordinates and very supportive superiors. Superiors have excellent technical know how and it makes our life easy. However, modern ideas to increase efficiency are accepted and can be implemented. There is no dearth for appreciation if we excel in our task as well.

    # Nature of work - Core technical work, one of the best experiences one can get after passing out B.Tech. Exposure to different aspects of engineering. Contact with professionals in the power industry working in tandem. Your technical knowledge will also increase once you start enjoying your work.

    # Salary and perks - Its more than sufficient (in fact plenty) to satisfy your need, not your greed. Salary shall always be compared with living expense. Its almost nill here (I mean need of course). Education & Medical benefits along with 24x7 Electricity (@~Rs. 120 per month) and water supply (@~Rs 4 per month) are the perks.

Starting gross salary for a GET will be around Rs. 53k. After one year you will be promoted to DEE and gross salary will change to Rs. 65k. PRP will be around Rs.1.25 Lakh per annum (Depends on a lot of parameters like your designation, your performance, your division's performance, NLC performance, Profit of the company and so on and so forth). Gross CTC will be around 10-11 lakh for DEE. <Salary under revision as per 3rd CPC Hence, you can expect a hike of minimum 15-20%>.

Ofcourse, accomodation too is with nominal charges (say Rs. ~190 per month). Coming to accomodation, quarters in Neyveli TS were built around late 1980s. The facilities were a luxury then. But now its not. It can however be made very good with some spending on the same.

    # Work life balance - Rarely you get to work more than 8 hours a day. It itself is a big positive. Excellent work life balance. Plenty of time for your family and friends. Very liberal sanction on holidays also makes your life easy.

    Cons

    # Chances to take post grads from reputed Universities are less once you join here. However, part time possible. Chances of attending conferences are also there if you convince your unit head of the need and if time permits.

    # Company is having its office in Neyveli(TN), Barsingsar(Rajasthan), Ghatampur (Near Kanpur, UP). Travelling to your home town can be an issue as the project sites are not connected directly by airports. However, you can use bus/ train service. Company is also setting up new projects in Odisha ans solar projects across TN.

    # Greenfield project always comes up in remote areas. Especially the power projects. NLC is no exception. Hence if you are born and brought up in metros, you will miss access to many modern services like restaurants and coffee shops such as CCD, McDonalds, Pizza hut, Dominos, delivery services at home, taxi services like Uber etc... However, you will get serene calm township life instead. (Like or dislike is highy personal).

    # Options of entertainment for weekends (say beaches, parks, hill stations, malls etc...) within a travel time of 15-20 mts is almost nill. Hence, you may feel bored. However, if you are posted in Neyveli, you can have a trip to pondicherry ( Max 2 hrs journey time) or Chennai (Takes arnd 5 hrs) to get refreshed. You can visit your hometown once in a month if you are homesick. It will be a relief from office duties.

    # Yes, its a government undertaking company. Hence procedures and protocols are important here. You will get a feeling that its creating unnecessary delays in many things which can be easily done.

    # It is a public sector. Hence most of the units will be headed by either a General Manager or a Dy. General Manager. Hence to take an ultimate decision in your unit, you will have to rise to that position which happens only around 5 yrs from retirement. Hence, you feel short of real power when compared to parrallel employees working in state govt or central govt. However, you can raise your opinions and give suggestions to influence any decisions.

    Advice to Management

    # Realistic targets, achieving them and passing on the credits to your employees shall be way to go.

    # Be modern, inculcate that culture, increase efficiency and attract the youth.

    # Its a competitive world. Hence, to compete with private player, optimising your resources and getting best ourput from your employees will pay you returns in galore.

    # Grade your employees properly. Reward the deserved and punish the sloths. Its a must to achieve efficiency. Understanding your employees is a primary requirement. Based on the same, assign tasks to them. Set them targets. Monitor the progress and ensure the completion wirhin stipulated time.

    # Increse the opportunity to grow, allow them to go and earn knowledge from outside world. It will create a wonderful knowledge base for a core power sector company to turn to a power sector giant.
