Pros

Benefits and discounts are nice. Its pretty easy to transfer. I got promoted pretty fast.

Cons

They put a freeze on wages for the next year that is company wide. As a cook I am looked down upon by sales department. You have to deal with a lot of arrogant rich people. People that have no experience restaurant are the senior management so they have no idea what they are talking about and think they are judges on top chef. They senior management use negative reinforcement on the lower management and it trickles down to the employees.

Advice to Management

That negative reinforcement dose not work. That you need to think of employs as an investment. That when you promote someone you should give them a raise too.

    Pros

The company is fairly well respected within the retail industry and local community. There is job growth potential (to leadership level) without a degree.

    Cons

    At a leadership level:

-The number of hours one needs to commit to get the job done satisfactorily.
-The unspoken expectation that the hours will be worked, without complaint, regardless of the toll it takes on ones personal life/family.
-The idea that Nordstrom senior management is 'compassionate' about employees having a balance between life and work.
-Being hired into a new role only to find that there is no training or coaching available - sink or swim time!

The majority of successful people in leadership at Nordstrom, have no children, grown children or are single. As a woman, having it all (wife, mother and employee) is neither a realistic, nor healthy expectation in working at a leadership level within the company.

    Advice to Management

Practice what the company preaches (open door policy - no ramifications, anonymity) and every once in awhile actually ask your employees how they feel about the job they are doing. Ask the employee what they think of the job 'you' or their direct manager is doing. Open the door for back and forth communication. Know how many hours it is taking for the people on your team to complete their required tasks within a week. Know how long it would take YOU to complete their required tasks within a week! If you have an employee (or ten) that are burning the candle at both ends to get the job done, there might be something wrong with the process.

Performance reviews are long and involved and few and far between - especially if the employee is new to a role and/or struggling. An opportunity to give and take feedback in a more frequent, casual environment would probably yeild a great deal of wisdom about your employees and the jobs they are doing.
