I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (More than a year)

Pros

The Big N has an amazing promote from within philosophy (though we're starting to look outwards for fresh ideas), great opportunities for career grow, and a freedom to take chances and try new things while running your business. Certainly a fantastic culture in customer service and teamwork.

Cons

Typical 'water-cooler' politics which you'll find in any company you work for, larger than normal amounts of gossipping (that's retail for you), expectations inconsistent and varied, poor compensation for the amount of work delivered.

Advice to Management

Keep your head down and move humbly forward.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You really can make as much as you like if you build a clientele. Once you work for the company and understand the culture, they will always make a place for you. Many are "lifers".

    Cons

Working holidays and weekends, few are lucky enough to have a set schedule. Managers work the longest hours of anyone. Managers are overworked and underpaid, expected to sell as well as running a department. Other salespeople can be very very competitive, lots of gossip and backstabbing.

    Advice to Management

Stand up to store managers more, be an advocate for your staff. Allow employees time to build clientele instead of coming down so hard on them if they don't have a flourishing clientele as a new staff member. It takes time.
