I worked at Nordstrom full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Great company. Lots of opportunity to move around if you have a great manager. They genuinely care about their employees and empower you to make a lot of decisions. They also are closed on major holidays unlike some other retailers.

Cons

If you have a bad department manager you're screwed out of a lot of opportunities. Worked long hours and lots of weekends. Commission sales are great except Nordstrom's flexible return policy can hurt you sometimes.

    I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    +Depending on your sales position within your store, you have the potential to be compensated very well in comparison to working for other retailers

    +Great company benefits

    +20% employee discount at both full line and rack stores, occasional 40% discount days off Nordstrom Brands (NPG) at both full line and rack stores, and one day a year where you are able to receive 40% off everything at full line and rack stores

    +If working in cosmetics, I found that in comparison to working for other cosmetic departments in other department stores, I received more gratis at Nordstrom, generally. However, that does depend on your position as well, meaning if you are rovering and/or part time, you likely would not share the same perspective

    +Overall, great place to potentially learn about a multitude of things, especially in comparison to other cosmetic departments of competing retailers

    Cons

    -As with any job, but especially one in sales, the environment can often grow contentious and tense between co-workers

    -This will vary from store to store, but generally the work place can be very political, meaning if you are liked by management, you can usually get away with most things(unethically selling, gossiping, implementing mediocre or below average work standards, taking home an excess of gratis every week, etc). I worked with an employee who once openly verbally assaulted another employee on the sales floor in front of customers in regards to a sale, profanity was used, and the assaulting employee was yelling loud enough that other people from across the department could hear him, and yet no disciplinary action was taken against this initial employee. This same assaulting employee takes advantage of the time clock (takes half hour breaks, when supposed to be taking ten minute breaks), has been complained on by numerous other employees for instigating gossip, has taken testers from the stock room without having them signed out through management, and has done much, much more, that I have witnessed first-hand, yet as luck would have it, he is also good friends with the department manager, which I feel contributes as to why he is still employed there

    -SPH and PTR structure being affected by returns, which are not actual returns sometimes, but exchanges that are not switched over by all employees who are processing the transaction, because they want to take credit for the sale

    -You are taxed 30% on gratis, if it comes from within the store, which I find is a bit inflated, especially if gratis is very old or partially used

    -Some sales goals are unrealistic and should be more so determined by the status quo of the economy, as opposed to the buying office

    -Coaching from managers, at least in my store, was very minimal, if even existent. And if there was a moment where coaching would be done, it would come off very scripted and contrived (not from every manager, but most)

    -Personal Book, while great in its intent, is also flawed in a lot of areas

    Advice to Management

    Sometimes "use your best judgement" is not the best philosophy to implement on your employees of the company, especially when it's very apparent that some people have very poor judgement. Also, management should lead by example, why would employees take management and the rules they set that seriously, if they see management doing otherwise?

    Low pay, staging all day and hard to get away for breaks.
