I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Truly a customer focused company
20% employee discount that is also valid at Nordstrom Rack (33% for managers/pace setters)
If you are fortunate to get a good manager you will learn a lot

    Cons

A return policy (or lack of one) that is detrimental to employees. Nordstrom will take anything back, regardless of condition or purchase date. Unfortunately there are customers who take advantage of this fact and blatantly abuse their return privileges. I started working in Via C, Collectors and St John which are all luxury designer departments. There were women who would purchase $8,000 worth of merchandise and return 3-4 months later when the newest collection would come out. This would result in a full $8000 refund for the customer and an $8000 to the selling employee's overall sales for the pay period. Even after moving departments and selling in the men's sportswear department I have seen jeans and slacks that have already been altered accepted for return.

    Advice to Management

Place some parameters on your return policy. I saw it repeatedly grossly abused over the course of the 2 years I was employeed. Often by people who were known to be "repeat offenders" with no consequence.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great experience in customer service. This is a good tool to have for other jobs in sales, because Nordstrom teaches you how to get more clients in order to build a personal book.

    Cons

System only works if you are in a high demand department. They further flood the department with salespeople, and this dilutes your chances to grow your personal book (ie: make money). Nordstrom wants younger sales people to give the impression that the company is hip and youthful. This philosophy doesn't work because it dilutes the older experienced salespeople, thus customer service is compromised due to lack of customer experience. Departmental and general store managers aren't experienced in basic managerial concepts because they haven't had experience with working with older salespeople or older customers. Some managers develop a "click" system to hide their inability to perform basic motivational managerial duties. In the end this system only promotes disillusions and conflict among workers. This system (click system) also effects paychecks negatively and is bias in promoting (only the ones that is in the Managers "click" get promoted) .

    Advice to Management

Have a ratio of young to older sales people that allows experience and youth to coexist. This way sales and customer service are maximized. This also exposes experienced salespeople to young inexperienced salespeople while " naturally training" the next future Nordstrom manager (leader). Promote the best TALENT regardless of age, sex, race or gender.
