I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

health/dental/vision benefits and 401K, opprtunity to purchase stock at a slight discount, the ability to build your own business if you are a great salesperson

Cons

Must be mobile to move up in the company, any disputes seem to favor management over sales staff, arbitrary schedule ranking process, beware if you don't apreciate gratuitous sports mataphores and rallies, gossip and favoritism run ramapant

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Clean workspace, discount, okay benefits- if you work enough hours to earn them, some fantastic co-workers among the immature and mean ones, ability to interact with customers in high-traffic departments

    Cons

Catty high school environment amongst salespeople, manager manipulation, benefits held hostage by manager hour allotment, if you don't know how to use an Apple product intuitively you will not know how to check out customers without help for several weeks, detrimental to your physical wellbeing from long periods of standing in dress code-acceptable shoes,

    Advice to Management

Give your full-time employees the guarantee of benefits, not based on X hours per month. Make sure your employees are not playing high school games and engaging in typical commission return games to damage their fellows. Don't punish employees for slow traffic periods, especially when they work in areas like Collectors, Via C, Indie, and St. John. Train employees on mobiles in orientation, not after they're already on the floor. Don't promote based on rank- promote based on drive, personability, and effort, not a number based on their sales in low-traffic departments. I would have stayed with this company if not for the entrapment in designer departments due to low sales traffic.
