Pros

Business is strong, market fluctuations have less overall effect on operations. NS is well diversified in it's traffic base. There are no worries of job loss. NS requires HIGH level of integrity. You can count on the word of the people you work with. For someone with my background and education, NS provides opportunities that cannot be found elsewhere. They promote both from within and without, looking for competent leaders and managers, pedigrees and connections will not help you if you are unable to advance the business. Lastly NS provides above average compensation

Cons

Union shop, long hours, unions, very young front line supervisory staff

Advice to Management

We're on the right track, keep supporting those in the field. Swift and decisive action against those with integrity issues is appreciated

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time

    Pros

Somewhat competitive salary with yearly bonuses based on company performance and yearly raises based on personal performance. You're always busy with hardly any downtime and always learning something new. Most people are great to work with and you're able to build relationships easily.

    Cons

Work life balance is non-existent. Work 13 hour days on off shifts with weekdays off even for those who have been there for 10+ years. Schedule changes from month to month. Cannot plan vacations too far in advance due to constant schedule changes.

I worked at Norfolk Southern as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent pay and depending on the team your coworkers are the best part of the experience. Probably the most fun I've had at a job.

    Cons

You could say the culture is a little old but really no cons.
