Current Employee - Electrical Engineer Technician
Approves of CEO

Pros

1. pay is decent
2. benefits are great
3. having a pension ain't bad either
4. sometimes you're doing nothing at work, but still getting paid ... "hurry up and wait" has it's benefits!
5. they know how to make money ... which eventually makes it's way down to employees and not just VP's

Cons

1. the management practices need to hurry up and make it to the 21st century
2. they "know" who they're going to promote before the "so called" interviews begin, so don't think you're going to get promoted from within without knowing the right people
3. they call themselves "railroaders" and their serious about it! It's a culture that they try to force on you ... whether you agree with the characteristics of the culture or not!

The term I hate most - "Well, this is the railroad ... "

4. They work the crap out of you ... trust me, if you're getting paid well they're going to work you to the point where you feel severely underpaid.
5. Also, depending on what your position is and where you work the work-life balance can be a challenge.

Advice to Management

Will you extra old guys please retire already. You guys will literally work on the railroad until you die!

    Pros

Great company and great people. The benefits are great and railroad retirement is something to looks forward to and is great security.

    Cons

It's takes a long time to get to the top since everyone stays employed for the duration of their whole career...so you definitely have to wait for your chance.

    Advice to Management

I think for the most part management seems to do a good job at leading. However, some managers seem to push off their work to their subordinates which i don't think it very fair.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Decent pay and good benefits. Working at the heart of American transportation. Average job satisfaction. Great retirement if you make it that far.

    Cons

Little time off. No family life. No teamwork. Poor union work ethic. All the responsibility but no real authority. Never any good news. Wears you to the bone.

    Advice to Management

Get away from industrial revolution management schemes. Drop the whip and robotic approach to resolve workplace issues. Remember the Pigmalion effect...people become what you tell them they are. More trust, more communication, less Gestapo tractics will get you where you want to go.
